Cardio Workout Fundamentals

If you're looking for the best cardio workouts for a treadmill, elliptical trainer, exercise bike and running read this page very carefully.

An effective cardio workout is one that suits your goals at any given point in time. For example, if you're just starting a workout plan and trying to get in shape, it doesn't make any sense to do a cardio workout that is for marathon training!

And Likewise, it wouldn't do a trained athlete any good to do a 'fat burning' workout designed for a beginner when the athlete needs to increase ther VO2 max...

Types of Cardio Workouts

There are three basic types of cardio workouts. Choosing one depends on your goals.

General Cardio Workouts
Most people will choose a beginner cardio workout for their workout plan. You can perform a good cardio workout for general fitness by using a treadmill, elliptical trainer, exercise bike, running, roller blading or rebounding etc.

In a general cardio routine, there is no specific goal in mind except to increase your overall fitness level to improve your day to day activity and stress level.

Fat Loss Cardio Workout
The main goal of this type of cardio workout is fat loss and weight loss. The intensity should remain high through the entire workout. The best way to lose fat on this type of workout is to use a treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical trainer either at home or at the club.

Try to do some form of interval training as that will burn the fat quicker. If you're not familiar with interval training try this interval training cardio workout.

Sport Specific Cardio Workout
If you're training for a marathon, getting ready for a long bike tour, or getting in shape for football, golf, softball etc., you need to train specifically for that event with your cardio workout.

The best cardio workouts for each sport will vary depending on what the specific goal is - if you're training for a 10k your cardio workout will be much different than one for competing in swimming.
